Music Clubhouse
The Music Clubhouse was created as a space for local youth, ages 8-18, to engage in positive music and art activities in their own neighborhood. Combining traditional music instruction with our unique youth development model, children and teens visit the Music Clubhouse for school day and after school opportunities to explore different musical styles, build technical skills, appreciate cultural influences in music, and become community leaders and art advocates.
Each year, the Music Clubhouse employs high school youth, training them as Youth Music Ambassadors. These youth undergo a workforce development curriculum, receive after school homework help through Mission Possible, manage daily Clubhouse operations, and lead the four Clubhouse ensembles, which promote arts in the community and use music to spread positive, youth-centered messages. The following music videos were created by Clubhouse youth:
Sociedad Latina’s Music Clubhouse operates in a 1,400 square foot, state-of-the-art facility, complete with its own performance space and recording studio. Clubhouse programming is designed to promote long-term engagement in the arts, with opportunities for youth to build advanced skills over time and connect with additional opportunities such as acceptances to Boston Arts Academy or Berklee's City Music program. Programming is also designed to engage a diverse group of youth with varying skills and interests, with an array of programs offered during the school day, after school, and weekend hours. Options include:
- Instrument lessons in percussion, keyboard, guitar, and voice.
- Musicology Workshops for the community
- Community Events
- Arts Exploration
- Youth Ensembles
- Beat Making
- Career Exploration in the music industry
As a pilot site for the Boston Public School Arts Expansion Initiative, the Music Clubhouse extended hours of operation in Sept. 2009 to provide school-day music programming in addition to out-of-school-time programming to middle and high school students from our four partner schools: The Maurice J. Tobin K-8 School, New Mission High School, Madison Park Technical Vocational High School, and Newcomers Academy.
